I adore this movie, and it has made me care more about Roman Catholicism than I ever have in the past.
Genuinely, though, I have so many good things to say about Conclave. I'm going to start with the technical aspects of it first, and then move on to a more spoiler filled section discussing my thoughts on particular plot points, with a warning beforehand so you can stop reading if you don’t want it spoiled for you. With that: onto the review!
Lisy Cristl's costume design in Conclave is incredible. She captures each cardinals personality and ideals in the cross that they wear: gold for consevative cardinals like Tedesco, and silver for liberals like Bellini. The stories of their potential to be pope and personalities are also displayed throughout the movie by their watches (I’ll link a really interesting tumblr post below discussing this). In a movie where everyone is dressed almost exactly the same, her designs have allowed each cardinal to stand out in their own way. This is helped by the unique glasses that some of the cardinals use.
